SUMMARY:Emine Şule Yazıcı (Koç University) — On the minimum number
of entries in a set of maximal mutually orthogonal partial Latin squares
LOCATION:TB 130\, Boğaziçi University South Campus
DESCRIPTION:The problem addressed in this talk concerns partial Latin squ
ares. It is related to the Turán-type problem of determining the maximu
m size of a multipartite graph that does not contain any copy of a speci
fic complete graph $K_r$. In graph-theoretic terms\, we show that for su
fficiently large $n$\, the minimum number of $K_r$ subgraphs that must b
e removed from the complete $r$-partite graph $K_{r\\times n}$ in order
to leave a $K_r$-free graph is approximately $n^2/(r-1)$.\n\nA Partial L
atin square of order $n$\, denoted by $\\mathrm{PLS}(n)$\, is an $n \\ti
mes n$ array\, with entries from an $n$-element set\, such that each ele
ment of this set occurs at most one in every row and every column of the
array. A maximal $\\mathrm{PLS}(n)$ is a partial Latin square of order
$n$ that cannot be extended to another $\\mathrm{PLS}(n)$ by inserting a
ny entry into any empty cell. For $k \\geq 2$\, $k$ Partial Latin square
s of the same order $n$ are said to be mutually orthogonal if\, when sup
erimposed\, each of the $\\binom{k}{2}n^2$ possible ordered pairs of ent
ries appears at most once in the cells of the superimposed square. A max
imal $k$-$\\mathrm{OPLS}(n)$ is a $k$-$\\mathrm{OPLS}(n)$ that cannot be
extended to another $k$-$\\mathrm{OPLS}(n)$ by inserting any possible e
ntry $k$-tuple into any empty cell.\n\nWe show that a maximal $k$-$\\mat
 hrm{OPLS}(n)$ has at least $n^2/(k+1)$ filled cells when $k = 2$ or $3$
or if the array is balanced\, settling a earlier conjecture in the liter
ature. We also determine the size of the minimum size maximal $k$-$\\mat
hrm{OPLS}(n)$s and prove that these arrays are unique up to row column p
 ermutations.

SUMMARY:Kübra Benli (Boğaziçi University) — Prime numbers in arithme
 tic progressions
LOCATION:TB 130\, Boğaziçi University South Campus
DESCRIPTION:Let $q \\geq 3$ be an integer. Let $a$ be an integer with $(a
\, q) = 1$. The prime number theorem for arithmetic progressions gives a
 n asymptotic formula for the number of primes $p \\leq x$ with $p \\equi
v a \\bmod q$. In this talk\, we will first investigate this asymptotic
formula with available error terms. Then\, we will focus on the sign of
the normalized error term for the count of primes in arithmetic progress
ions\, briefly introducing some problems in ‘Comparative Prime Number
Theory’. Finally\, based on a joint work with Greg Martin and Paul Pé
ringuey\, we will discuss the logarithmic density of positive real numbe
rs $x$ for which the normalized error terms for the counts of primes $\\
 equiv a \\bmod q$ and $\\equiv b \\bmod q$ up to $x$ are of the same sig
n for $(ab\, q) = 1$\; under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis and the
 Linear Independence Hypothesis.

LOCATION:TB 130\, Boğaziçi University South Campus
DESCRIPTION:This talk discusses contact structures within the context of
derived algebraic geometry\, a framework that combines algebraic geometr

ertain moduli spaces inheriting a shifted contact structure\, the Legend
rian intersection theorem\, and the contact AKSZ construction for mappin

SUMMARY:Konstantinos Maronikolakis (Bilkent University) — How bad can t
he radial behaviour of a holomorphic function be?
LOCATION:TB 130\, Boğaziçi University South Campus
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will focus on holomorphic functions on the
unit disc. It is clear that the radial limit of such functions need not
exist as we approach some point of the unit circle. Indeed\, we can thin
k of simple examples where the radial limit is infinity. Can the limit f
ail to exist in another way? Can the limit fail to exist on many points
of the unit circle? The heuristic answer that we will arrive at is that
most holomorphic functions have maximally bad radial behaviour. During t
he talk\, we will explore the methods and recent developments on these k
inds of questions. In particular\, we will emphasise the importance of s
imultaneous approximation\, which underlies these results.

SUMMARY:Aleksandra Marinković (University of Belgrade) — Symplectic an

LOCATION:Anderson Hall TB 310\, Boğaziçi University
DESCRIPTION:Background talk. I will first explain basic properties of tor

on symplectic manifolds with a convex or concave contact type boundary.
Such a toric action preserves the contact structure on the boundary\, s
o the boundary itself is a contact toric manifold. To every contact tori
c manifold we associate a moment cone\, the moment map image of the symp

SUMMARY:Bülent Tosun (University of Alabama) — On embedding problems f

LOCATION:Anderson Hall TB 310\, Boğaziçi University
DESCRIPTION:Background talk. Given a closed\, orientable 3-manifold Y\, i
t is of great interest but often difficult to determine whether Y may be
smoothly embedded in R⁴. This is the case even for integer homology s
 pheres\, and restricting to special classes such as Seifert manifolds\;
the problem is open in general. Under additional geometric consideration
s coming from symplectic geometry\, or complex geometry\, the problems o
ften become tractable and in certain cases a uniform answer is possible.

LOCATION:Anderson Hall TB 310\, Boğaziçi University
DESCRIPTION:Dynnikov coordinates give a combinatorial description of curv

by piecewise-linear update rules. In this talk I use these coordinates t

SUMMARY:Gordana Matić (University of Georgia) — Calculating Spectral O

LOCATION:Anderson Hall TB 310\, Boğaziçi University
DESCRIPTION:We describe an invariant of contact structures in dimension t
hree that arises as a refinement of the Ozsváth–Szabó contact class
in Heegaard Floer homology. This “spectral order” invariant takes va
lues in the set of non-negative integers together with infinity. It is z
ero for overtwisted contact structures\, and computable in a limit from
any supporting open book decomposition. It is nondecreasing under Legend
rian surgery\, hence infinite for Stein-fillable contact structures\, so
finiteness of the invariant is an obstruction to Stein fillability. We
give some examples and describe an algorithm to compute the spectral ord

SUMMARY:Ina Petkova (Dartmouth College) — An Introduction to Knot Floer
  Homology
LOCATION:Anderson Hall TB 310\, Boğaziçi University
DESCRIPTION:Background talk. Knot Floer homology is a powerful invariant
of knots and links\, developed by Ozsváth and Szabó in the early 2000s
. Among other properties it detects the genus\, detects fiberedness\, an
d gives a lower bound to the 4-ball genus. The original definition invol
ves counting holomorphic curves in a high-dimensional manifold\, and as
a result the invariant can be hard to compute. In 2007 Manolescu\, Ozsv
áth and Sarkar came up with a purely combinatorial description for knot
s in the 3-sphere\, called grid homology. I will sketch the original con
struction\, then discuss grid homology in greater detail.

symplectic manifolds: given a symplectic manifold X\, which manifolds c
an arise as contact type hypersurfaces in X? The situation in dimension
4 is expected to be significantly more constrained. I will report on rec
ent joint work with T. Mark identifying an obstruction for a contact 3-m
anifold to embed in certain closed symplectic 4-manifolds as the boundar
y of a Weinstein domain\, and explore consequences for the symplectic to
pology of such domains in small rational surfaces.

LOCATION:Anderson Hall TB 310\, Boğaziçi University
DESCRIPTION:Lightning talk. For surfaces of finite type the mapping class
group is generated by finitely many Dehn twists and even by a small num
ber of torsion elements. For infinite-type surfaces the group becomes Po
lish and standard generating sets fail. We show that for n ≥ 16 the ma
pping class group of the infinite-genus surface with n ends can be topol
ogically generated by four involutions\, and that those of the Loch Ness
Monster and Jacob's Ladder surfaces can be generated by three. Joint wo

DESCRIPTION:Lightning talk. The study of mapping class groups of finite-t

free groups. One shared feature is that their simplest subgroups\, gener
